Chimney Removal to Resolve Ongoing Roof Leak – Portsmouth
This chimney had been causing an ongoing roof leak and had also become structurally unstable.
On inspection, there were deep cracks through the pebble dash, with visible splits in the brickwork behind — clear signs the chimney stack had failed. The chimney pots were leaning, and the benching had blown, allowing water to penetrate into the stack.
The box gutter was undersized, leaving a very tight gap between the chimney and ridge, making it prone to blocking and water build-up.
Lead flashings had also been incorrectly installed — cut in diagonally rather than stepped — and only chased into the render instead of the brickwork. Once the render failed, this created a direct path for water ingress into the property.
Due to the number of defects and the ongoing nature of the leak, repairs would only have been temporary.
We removed the chimney stack to below roof level, rebuilt the roof structure, installed new breathable membrane and battens, and tiled back in to match the existing roof.
The roof is now fully watertight, secure, and free from future chimney-related issues.
